1.From Sunshine Coast to Bundaberg
On the first day of Christmas, my special someone and I embarked on a journey from the Sunshine Coast to Bundaberg.
Bundaberg is a fantastic destination in Queensland, known for its sea turtles, delicious rum, and refreshing ginger beer. Not only is it famous for these treats, but it’s also your starting point for exploring the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef, a natural wonder.
2.From Newcastle to Yamba
On the second day of Christmas, my best friend and I set off from Newcastle to visit Yamba.
If you’re looking for world-class surf spots and pristine beaches away from the hustle and bustle of Byron Bay, Yamba is a fantastic choice. You can catch some waves at the National Surfing Reserve, Angourie Point, which boasts some of the finest right-hand breaks in Australia. For a little adventure, you can also try cliff jumping into the natural springs of Angourie Blue and Green Pools. To truly connect with nature, consider taking the Yuraygir Coastal Walk, a 65km trail south to Red Rock with camping spots along the way.
3.From Rockhampton to Biloela
On the third day of Christmas, my family and I journeyed from Rockhampton to the countryside.
Starting from the 10th of December, our routes now include Biloela. This charming place is a haven for fishing enthusiasts, with Callide Dam right nearby. It’s also your gateway to exploring Kroombit Tops National Park and Mount Scoria. While you’re in town, don’t forget to pay a visit to the Queensland Heritage Park, where you can learn about the pioneering spirit that shaped Australia.
4.From Melbourne to Canberra
On the fourth day of Christmas, I escaped the city with a trip from Melbourne to Canberra.
Canberra is a city brimming with cultural and national treasures at every turn. It’s a must-visit destination, and what’s more, it’s just a convenient overnight bus ride away from Melbourne. You can have a delightful picnic by the picturesque Lake Burley Griffin, explore the impressive National Gallery of Australia, and get up close to our iconic native wildlife at the National Zoo & Aquarium. Don’t miss the chance to tour Parliament House, enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city from Telstra Tower, and pay your respects at one of the nation’s most important landmarks – the Australian War Memorial.
5.From Brisbane to Rainbow
Beach On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love surprised me with a journey from Brisbane to Rainbow Beach.
Named after its vibrant sand cliffs, Rainbow Beach is a charming coastal town that serves as the perfect hub for exploring the region. Whether you want to slide down the spectacular 120m (394ft) high sand dune at Carlo Sand Blow with your boogie board or take in breathtaking views of Double Island Point, Inskip Peninsula, Tin Can Bay, and the colorful sands from the top, Rainbow Beach has it all. Trek up to the Double Island Point lighthouse and keep an eye out for dolphins, turtles, dugongs, sharks, and other marine life. Afterward, hit the beach to ride the longest wave break in Australia.
6.From Adelaide to Coober Pedy
On the sixth day of Christmas, I embarked on a trip from Adelaide to Coober Pedy with my good friends.
Coober Pedy is a truly extraordinary place where homes, hotels, shops, and even churches are carved into caves beneath the earth’s surface. Seeing it is the only way to truly grasp its reality! Known as the opal capital of the world, Coober Pedy offers a unique experience at the Umoona Opal Mine & Museum. There, you can explore an original opal mine and a genuine dug-out home on display and shop for opal stones and jewelry. For a one-of-a-kind round of golf, head to the Coober Pedy Opal Fields Golf Club, where there’s no grass – just sand and rocky fairways!
7.From Canberra to Sydney
On the seventh day of Christmas, I reunited with my family after a journey from Canberra to Sydney.
What more can we say about Sydney that hasn’t been said already? It’s one of the world’s most beloved cities, and for good reason! Sydney offers an incredible array of things to see and do, from iconic landmarks to stunning beaches and natural wonders, ensuring you’ll never have a dull moment. Whether you’re climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, taking a dip in the Bondi Iceberg Pools, or going on a day trip to the Blue Mountains, there’s always something exciting to do.
8.From Alice Springs to Mataranka
On the eighth day of Christmas, my best friend and I embarked on a journey from Alice Springs to Mataranka.
If you’re looking to leave the stresses of 2021 behind, a dip in the Mataranka Thermal Pools is just what the doctor ordered. For an even more tranquil experience, head to the less crowded Bitter Springs, where you can find cabins and camping options right at the water’s edge.
9.From Townsville to Airlie Beach
On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love surprised me with a trip from Townsville to Airlie Beach.
Airlie Beach is the gateway to the world-famous Whitsunday Islands, and it’s a destination worth visiting in its own right. You can explore numerous walking trails, take in stunning lookouts, and relax on beautiful beaches while soaking up the sunshine. We highly recommend catching a sunset at Northerlies (they offer a courtesy bus!), and don’t miss the opportunity to savor the best steak you’ll ever taste at KC’s Bar & Grill, located right in the heart of town. 10.From Brisbane to Dalby
On the tenth day of Christmas, I treated myself to a journey from Brisbane out to Dalby.
Dalby offers the perfect escape with its refreshing country air, delectable produce, and natural wonders in the Darling Downs region. As an agricultural hub and the gateway to the Bunya Mountains, which boasts the world’s largest natural Bunya pine forest, Dalby has much to offer. You’ll find ideal picnic spots and camping areas at the Bunya Mountains National Park, along with walking trails leading to waterfalls and lookouts that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
11.From Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay
On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love joined me on a journey from Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay.
Experience the relaxed way of life, the vibrant surf culture, and the unspoiled natural beauty of the bohemian and captivating Byron Bay. It’s no surprise that celebrities like Zac Efron and Chris Hemsworth have chosen to call this place home!
Byron Bay offers an array of walking trails leading to major attractions, including the Cape Byron Lighthouse, where you can catch glimpses of dolphins from the easternmost point of Australia. Most of what you’re looking for is conveniently within walking distance, from famous markets to abundant shopping opportunities.
12.From Darwin to Daly Waters
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my best friend accompanied me on a journey from Darwin to Daly Waters.
One of the quirkiest and most iconic destinations in Australia is the Daly Waters Pub, where numerous visitors have “left their mark” – specifically, bras hanging above the bar.
The legend of the bras hanging at the pub dates back to the 1980s when a bus driver made a bet with his female passengers. They had to consume a certain number of beers, or they’d leave their bras behind. This unusual tradition has since become a memorable part of the Daly Waters experience.
